Lube Drum Cart
The RPS Drum filter cart is designed for two main purposes. The filtration system removes all particles of contamination from drums of lubricant that will be used in plant equipment. It will also serve the purpose of mixing additives evenly in the drum because some additives will settle on the bottom while the drum is stored for long periods of time.
Both these functions are accomplished with the use of the Des Case drum kit. The device is screwed into the 2” bung hole in the drum. The device has a ¾” SS tube that goes to the bottom of the drum. The on-board electric pump pulls lube oil from the bottom of the drum and pumps it through the synthetic media filter. From the filter the oil is recycled back into the drum through a ½” SS tube. The entire drum can be circulated and filtered many cycles to remove particles down to 3 microns. This recycle action also evenly mixes the drums additive package for an even mixture in the lube oil.
The RPS drum filter cart is also set up to perform other tasks. By removing the hose from the return to the drum the filtered oil can then be transferred through the discharge hose to an application nozzle that is used to top off equipment components with highly filtered lubricants. An on board meter measures the amount of oil that is transferred to the equipment reservoir. The meter can be used for total flow and logged or reset after each application.
The next function of the RPS drum filter cart is the kidney loop function. A reservoir can be kidney looped through the filter to clean any reservoir such as a gearbox, hydraulic unit, or any container. This function is accomplished by removing the quick connect hose from the suction side of the drum and hooking up the suction hose to the pump. The suction hose can be connected to the equipment sump. The oil is then transferred from the equipment, through the electric pump, and through the filter. The lube oil is then returned to the component passing through the flow meter and back into the reservoir.
It is recommended that a reservoir be re-circulate at least 10 times the volume to be effective at removing contamination. This is the minimum amount of re-circulation and the unit can be re-circulated many more cycles for further ISO code reduction of contamination.
Safety
It should always be remembered that lube oil drums may be heavy, and sometimes around 400 lbs. Handle these drums with care and always use the cart on solid and level surfaces.
Components:
RPS Drum Cart
Heavy duty cart rated at 1000 lbs. capacity for moving 55 gallon drums around the facility. The cart has two feet to hold the bottom of the drum while moving. There is a safety strap to hold the drum while tipping into position. The drum should only be used and moved on level solid surfaces. The drum cart can be tipped back on a set of smaller wheels to help support while moving. Always have the bung holes at 9:00 and 3:00 to minimized lube leaking around the recirculation fitting or the Des Case breather when the drum is full. The drum cart also has a kick stand to keep it standing with or without a drum.
Des Case Drum Recirculation Kit
Used to transfer lube oils from the bottom of the drum and recycle the back into the top of the drum. The unit comes with a DC-2 Des Case breather that can be attached to the small port in the drum to keep moisture and contamination down to 3 microns from entering the drum during storage or use. Always store the kit in a clean area to minimize contamination.
Electric Pump
The electric pump on the cart is for lubricants up to ISO 220 viscosity. It will transfer low viscosity fluids such as hydraulic oils at around 10 GPM. The flow rate goes down as the viscosity increases closer to ISO 220. The pump has a built in on/off switch and is plugged into an extension cord reel. The pump also has a built in pressure recycle adjustment.
Donaldson Synthetic Media Filter
The Donaldson filter is rated at 10 microns Beta 1000. It has been tested to ISO 16889 standards. This means with this media it will also filter to 6 microns Beta 200 and 3 microns Beta 75. The more recycles the more particles are removed. The filter has a DP gauge which will indicate the filter media is getting dirty or plugged. Change the filter when it moves part way into the red range. Some higher viscosity oil will run at a higher pressure on the gauge. Make a mark where the gauge is at when the filter is new and then monitor the change.
Pressure Relief Valve
There is an on-board pressure relief valve that will protect the pump, filter, and hoses in the event the nozzle is closed or flow is disrupted for any reason. The relief valve will re-cycle oil back to the inlet of the electric pump. It can be adjusted if needed but should be set at 100PSIG.
Des Case DC-2 Breather
The Des Case DC-2 Breather is for the ¾” fitting on the lube oil drum. There is a PVC adapter that takes the ¾” bunge fitting to the 1” fitting on the Des case breather. This filer serves two purposes in that it will eliminate moisture entering the drum. It also has internal filter to remove particles larger than 3 microns from entering the drum.
Sample Port
The sample port is installed just after the filter to sample lubricants after recirculation to the drum or after the filter when kidney looping plant equipment. A sample can be taken by simply pushing the end of the sample while filling the sample bottle.
Hoses
Hoses on the unit are rated for vacuum applications on the suction side of the pump and 150 PSIG on the discharge side of the pumps. The vacuum hose is recognized by the steel spiral band in the hose. The standard braided hose is used on the pressure side of the pump. The discharge hose due to its duty is a black rough surface hydraulic for durability in it application. All fittings have dry lock connections to eliminate contaminations and drips from the fittings. Keep all the fittings covered when not in use.
Housekeeping
Keep all the components of the cart clean and free from contamination. Store the drum kit tubing in a sleeve or plastic bag when not in a drum. When not in use store the cart and components in a clean area.

Spare parts such as filters, breathers, hoses, fittings, etc. can be ordered.
