Why are you doing the PM tasks, and what are you getting from this effort?
Most often we do these preventive maintenance tasks because we have simply been “doing them for years'”. We mostly do them based on time, (every day, every week, every month). But why exactly are we doing the task? How do we even know that is the correct task and the frequency is correct?
Does the task say “Check the Fan”? What exactly does that mean? Should we just make sure that the “fan is still there”.
Many times we perform PM’s because the OEM says we should perform those tasks.
Alfa Laval states you should change the oil in there centrifuge every 30 days. When in fact it should be changed when it needs changed! Oil Analysis and sampling will let us know when that time is.
What is the PM finding/result? What has it found in the past year? I used to always ask my guys…what did you find in performing the PM or PdM. I wanted my staff to find and document things, not just check the boxes to complete maintenance the task.
